Connecting Through Talk INTRODUCTION

3 MODULES | 2 HOURS | AUD$10

Because you know there’s a better way to connect.

Module 1. What compassionate communication is

Here we discover what speaking compassionately is about and why it is important.  We look at language examples and consider what is effective, and what isn't.

Module 2. The framework of compassion

Here we take a look at the simple, but effective framework.  It has: two frames - Intention and Attention; four ingredients - Observation, Feelings, Needs and Requests; and three modes - Self Empathy, Honest Self Expression and Empathetic Listening.

Module 3. Preparing for a difficult conversation

Here we apply the framework to a situation in your own life that you would like to succeed at.  You are stepped through a preparation process so that when the right moment presents itself, you are ready for the conversation, speaking to be understood and listening to hear.

Connecting Through Talk THE INGREDIENTS

5 MODULES | 5 HOURS | AUD$10

At the completion of the course, you can receive personalised feedback on the final activity and a certificate of completion for AUD$15.

This is the second course in the Connecting Through Talk series offered by Coaching To Clarity on the language of compassion. We recommend you complete Course 1 (AUD$10), before progressing to Course 2.

Discover how to be your best self, alone and with others, for greater happiness and success at work and in life.

Module 1: What the four ingredients are

In this module, we revise the contents of Course 1, particularly the framework of compassionate talk.  We then look at an overview of what the four ingredients of observation, needs, feelings and requests (OFNR) are, understand the difference between reactive and responsive talk, and select scenarios for practicing our emerging skills in compassionate expression in the subsequent modules.

Module 2: Expressing an Observation

In Module 2 we explore the ingredient of Observation.  We begin with an explanation of what it is, consider models which are reactive and responsive, then deconstruct the models to understand the grammatical features of Observation.  You then practice expressing your own observation using a scenario of your choice from the list in Module 1.

Module 3: Expressing Needs

In Module 3 we explore the ingredient of Needs.  We begin with an explanation of what Needs are, consider models which express needs, then deconstruct the models to understand the grammatical features of Needs.  You then practice expressing your own needs using the scenario of your choice from the list in Module 1.

Module 4: Expressing Feelings

In Module 4 we explore the ingredient of Feelings.  We begin with an explanation of what Feelings are, consider models which express feelings in both blame-ful and blame-free ways, then deconstruct the models to understand the grammatical features of Feelings.  You then practice expressing your own feelings using the scenario of your choice from the list in Module 1.

Module 5: Expressing Requests

In Module 5 we explore the ingredient of Requests.  We begin with an explanation of what Requests are, consider models of the three kinds of Requests: for connection, action and clarification, after which we deconstruct their grammatical features.  You then practice expressing your own request using the scenario of your choice from the list in Module 1.

Connecting Through Talk BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

5 MODULES | 6 HOURS | AUD$10

At the completion of the course, you can receive personalised feedback on the final activity and a certificate of completion for AUD$15.

This is the third course in the Connecting Through Talk series on the language of compassion.  We recommend you complete Courses 1 and 2, before progressing to Course 3.

If you deal with people and need to enable cooperation and collaboration, then this course is for you.

Module 1: What the three modes are

In this module, we revise the contents of Courses 1 & 2, particularly the framework of compassionate talk and OFNR.  We are introduced to the three modes of compassionate talk: Self connection, Honest self-expression and Listening empathically.  Examples of these three modes are modelled.

Module 2: How we know what we need

In Module 2 we explore the mode of Self Connection, specifically self-empathy.  We begin with an explanation of what it is and consider a model which is deconstructed to reveal the five steps involved.   We then express self empathy by using the four ingredients of the framework according to the steps. We discover our needs through our feelings and make requests of ourselves for action or connection.

Module 3: How we express ourselves with honesty

In Module 3 we explore the mode of Honest Self-expression.  We begin with an explanation of what it is and consider a model which is deconstructed to reveal the language features involved.   We then express ourselves honestly to others by using the four ingredients of the framework in a clean, everyday manner. We discover how to express our needs and make requests hearfeltly without resentment, judgement or blame to have our needs met.

Module 4: How we listen to others empathically

In Module 4 we explore the mode of Empathic listening.  We begin with an explanation of what it is and consider a model which is deconstructed to reveal the language and extralinguistic features involved.   We then practice empathic listening to others by reflecting back what we hear using the framework of the four ingredients. We discover the art of 'being with a person' as they share their feelings, needs and requests from their heart.

Module 5: How we connect through talk

In Module 5 we bring it all together.  The three modes are demonstrated and practiced through a scaffolded composition of a compassionate dialogue.  We understand and experience the positive energy of using language responsively, the attunement to the feelings and needs of ourselves and others and the motivations underlying requests of ourselves and others.  In this way we connect compassionately through mutual understanding and the beauty of needs met.
